Foley hell, the gaffer is off rigging with the grip

Every industry has its fare share of acronyms and terminology and the film world is no different.
This article on Guerrilla Filmmaker is a Complete A to Z of common film terms used in filmmaking.

But it got me thinking – why or how did these names become?

Gaffer: “The head of the electrical department, responsible for the design and execution of the lighting plan for a production.” Why not call it Head of Lighting! Is it some reference to an over reliance on gaffer tape?

Well the Word detective has the answer as well as solutions to the Best Boy, the Foley, and Best Grip.

Better than being called the Worst Grip I suppose.
