Dreams of Evolution

Project: Dreams of Evolution
Dreams of Evolution screened as a finalist at “Songs Interwoven of Lights” at the Queensland Poetry Festival, on Sunday 26 August as part of the 2012 QPF Filmmakers Challenge! www.queenslandpoetryfestival.com

“I can think of nothing sadder than a goldfish in a bowl. Swimming in tight circles, such a lonely soul…”

These are the opening lines of Dreams of Evolution, a poem that features in Kate Toon‘s crowd-funded self-published poetry book Gone Dotty.
We’ve all pondered the existence of a goldfish in a bowl. Maybe this goldfish will help us ponder our own existence and encourage our own dreams of evolution to turn into reality.

Dreams of Evolution by Kate Toon
I can think of nothing sadder than a goldfish in a bowl,
Swimming in tight circles, such a lonely fishy soul.
With your tiny bulbous eyes, that pine to see the sea,
Longing for a little lover, to share your dull eternity.
All you have for company is a silly plastic weed,
Nothing to look forward to, except tomorrow’s feed.
Some pathetic grubby pebbles form your universe’s base,
I see nothing but depression written on your orange face.
Is your memory so short that this all seems brand-new?
Or is that 18-second thing entirely untrue?
Do you ever go to sleep, in the darkness of the night,
And dream of evolution, growing wings and taking flight?
Such iridescent beauty, you’re the bauble of the sea;
If you were my finned captive, I’d be sure to set you free.

Metroscreen DIY Distribution panel

Looking forward to talking on this panel on DIY distribution for Metroscreen

You can view and download the slidedeck here off Slideshare

Will add some thoughts about it after the chat!

Imagine having 3 million people see your film or thousands of people paying to download your content. At the next Metro Screen Connect event you can gather together with three industry experts who have helped many independent film projects, TV concepts and online content find and build audiences.

Come along to Metro Screen to hear from practitioners who have been breaking new ground and making their own rules to engage audiences. From DIY screenings to torrent distribution, find out from the experts what works and what doesn’t and where they see the audience building landscape is heading. What are the alternatives to the traditional distribution paths? How do filmmakers connect to an audience?

Speakers include:

John L Simpson, Titan View Media (The jammed, Men’s Group, 33 Postcards)
Ahmend Salama, Creative Director DLSHS (The Tunnel, Cedar Boys)
Nick Bolton, Viocorp, (Australia’s leading internet broadcaster)
Guest moderator – Dean Francis, writer/director

David Jones Fashion Show

A big night in the fashionista’s calendar and a big night for Viocorp – the summer launch of the David Jones fashion range. Miranda Kerr flew in especially for it. Viocorp were on hand to live stream the parade direct into David Jones. Last year we streamed it into their Facebook channel.

Production was trickier this year as Arena were present to film it for Foxtel so the camera crews got quite close.

We delivered it cross platform across web, mobile and tablet (see photo below) and very beautiful it looked too – the streaming quality I’m talking about of course.

Mwah mwah darling

Infographic: Online video snapshot

Article courtesy of the damn nice chaps at Marketing Magazine
I didn’t ask them if I can reproduce it but Sean and the boys wont mind as i gave them some of the info!
Check out the live webcast I did with Amy Weinberger, Vice President of ANZ for comScore

Online video’, a format ‘traditionally’ entailing short rather than long online clips, is the subject of Marketing’s latest infographic investigation.
The point that emerges most strongly out of our visualisation of comScore’s data is the rapid increase in the amount of video being consumed and the increase in the amount of time spent watching as more long form content moves online. These findings point to a future where connected TVs merge what is considered online video today and traditional broadcast television.
But while we wait for that future to arrive, there are a number of other evolutions taking place in the consumption of video through PCs, mobile devices and apps on smart TVs.
The average online video watcher consumes 158 clips per month or 14.3 hours of video. Men dominate, accounting for two-thirds of time spend watching, the reason for which we won’t hazard a guess other than to point out that adult themed video is the seventh most watched category, reaching almost one in four Australians!
The news media’s shift towards video content is being led by ninemsn (aggregated under Microsoft’s banner) and Yahoo!7, who registered higher viewer numbers in April than Fairfax and News Ltd. In the battle of the big digital newspaper groups, News eclipsed Fairfax by 200,000 views but did not hold the audience per video for quite as long.
Data brought in from comScore’s US analysis shows that one-third of viewers regularly use the internet for TV show consumption, via services such as Hulu and Ooyala. This behaviour skews heavily towards younger audiences with almost one in two 18-34 year olds regularly watching long form TV content via the internet.

Enter the Party

My good friend Alistair Ferrier at Mediacom produced this smart and engagng piece of content for NSW Health warning on the dangers of Hepatitis C.

For once a government TVC that doesn’t preach, and also he has recreated a house party that looks authentic. Great use of full screen video, with a nice viewer interactivity enabling you to choose your own journey through the party.

Speaking at NIDA Industry Week

Received a very pleasant phone call from NIDA asking me to come and speak to 3rd year students at NIDA as part of their Industry Week.

The session is called: The Co-op: Staging your own production:

The Actor emerging into the industry, now more than ever needs, to be proactive in creating work and managing their careers. The Co-op is one way of creating self employment and keeping alive their craft and skills. The aim of this session is to advise and provide insight into how to put up a production/work/film, what kind of pitfalls to watch out for and who to approach with your work – possible questions to answer:

Is a producer really necessary?
Where to find a producer?
Funding – different ways to raise funds
Marketing – social media, advertising etc
How do I propose/pitch my your work
Independent programs

I’ll be joined by Phil Spencer at Tamarama Rock Surfers and Skye Kunstelj NIDA Independent Program, which is the program that Sam and I were selected for, with our new work ‘SET’ which runs in April 2013 at NIDA.

Really looking forward to this discussion to see what Phil and Skye have to say. I wish the Producer wasn’t neccessary because I believe everyone should be a producer. Sadly, especially in the creative arts, the producer does the being the scenes work that doesn’t get noticed, is rather time consuming and certainly not as exciting as rehearsing or performing!

But a producer is neccessary because it frees the key creatives up from the administrative elements so they can concentrate solely on developing the artistic process to the best of their abilities.
